The Ibu Guru Project: Update

Last week we went to visit Desa Kukusan and, shocked by the conditions in which the teacher was living, I decided to embark on a mission to help her.

As I have previously explained, the poor conditions have resulted in teachers cycling through this village at an extremely rapid rate, and, therefor, leaving the children of the village without consistent education.

This is the current state of the teachers living quarters:

Holes in the roof are not ideal for the rainy season...

Flooring is dangerous.  Even the "supports" aren't safe to step on because the termites have been enjoying them...

After particularly gnarly weather on the weekend Ibu Fitri had to abandon this house and move to a room underneath the home of one of her neighbours.  The room, usually a place for goats, is dark and dingy and smells like, well, goats.  The windows have been covered in order to keep the rain out, and the people who live in the house have been able to give her a mattress to sleep on.

She is dry.

Today we went out to further assess the situation and discuss the best course of action.  Our plan is to build safe and comfortable teachers quarters for the village so that teachers are more inclined to stay.

If you, or someone you know, would like to help us get there your donation is VERY much appreciated!

You can donate to the #100BOOKSproject campaign fund.  Please let me know, when you donate, that you want your funds to go towards teacher support.
